Some Short Tips from The Resume Lady

Resume Techniques – Incorporate for Increased Response

  • 5 bullets in a run – more, loses emphasis where we want it focused.
  • Incorporate your softer skills, too – (motivation, intuition, creativity).
  • One format does not work for everyone – find one that is right for you.
  • Wordiness is not your friend – sentence construction should be concise and clear.
  • Resume styles change and can be different regionally – stay informed on new industry trends and local requirements.

Things to Remember

  • A resume and cover letter should catch the attention and interest of potential employers – not overwhelm them with details.
  • The resume is a tool to get you in the door for an interview, so you can have the opportunity to sell yourself through your presentation.
  • Employers are buying the whole package, so let them know a little about you – touch on your softer skills in the resume.
  • Everything you do on a daily basis is important, of course, but it doesn’t necessarily belong on your resume.
  • Your resume is your marketing brochure and as such it should be concise, clear, focused, and beautiful.

BE SAFE

When applying for a position online, be safe and use common sense. We live in an age of identity theft and electronic monitoring.

  • Do not give your social security number to anyone unless you are confident that the other party is who they claim to be and has an actual need for this information. For example, you could ask them for a publically listed call-back number to use for verification purposes.
  • If they state they cannot interview you without first having you fill out your social security number on an application, then they are NOT going to offer you a job, but the potential of being de-frauded. Disregard the email and DO NOT follow through with the employment promises being made.
  • Do not provide any non-work related personal information (e.g. social security number, eye color, marital status, etc.) over the phone or online. This is one way to steal your identity.
  • Be cautious when dealing with contacts outside your own country as we’ve seen so very many scams looking to defraud US citizens.
  • Be wary of emails that offer an opportunity that involves acting as a go-between for money transfers. We’ve all seen the fraud emails from a missionary widow pleading for help with something or other… Let’s not give them a chance to put you in a compromised position.
